Dr. Arjomandi's research activities are focused on understanding the physiologic and immunologic mechanisms via which environmental exposures contribute to chronic lung disease and how knowledge of these mechanisms could be translated to ways to better define, prognosticate, and manage disease burden.

His research efforts are dedicated to (1) investigate the biology of airway immune cells using inhalational exposure to ozone in humans as a model of lung injury simulating exacerbation in chronic lung disease, and (2) characterize the cardiopulmonary abnormalities in a cohort of individuals with history of prolonged heavy exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke as a model of occult chronic obstructive lung disease.

Dr. Shlipak, MD, MPH is a Co-Founder and Scientific Director of the Kidney Health Research Collaborative, a joint program of UCSF, NCIRE and the SFVAHCS. His research activities have the overall objection of improving our understanding of the determinants of kidney disease and our ability to detect, diagnose and treat kidney disease. Recently, he has been primarily focused upon building a diagnostic panel for kidney disease that would change how clinicians treat kidney disease.

Dr. Steinman is a national leader in identifying and improving the quality of medication prescribing in older adults, particularly those with multiple chronic conditions. Other research interests include improving care for older adults with multiple chronic conditions, and mentorship for junior investigators. Dr. Steinman is also involved in several local and national initiatives, including co-chair of the Beers Criteria Guideline of Potentially Inappropriate Medications for Older Adults.

Dr. Weiner is Principal Investigator of ADNI, a longitudinal study aimed at validating biomarkers for Alzheimer’s. He launched BrainHealthRegistry.org, aimed at accelerating treatment development for brain diseases. Recently he’s focused on developing tools to identify normal elders at risk for cognitive decline, and expanding the Brain Health Registry. Dr. Weiner has mentored over 120 postdoctoral fellows, authored 821 peer-reviewed research papers, and holds 19 research grants.

Dr. Estrella emigrated from the Philippines at age 8 and spent her adolescence in Nacogdoches, Texas. Having grown up in a family of nurses and teachers, she realized the personal gratification that accompanies a life of service to others. She obtained her medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. After completing her internal medicine residency and nephrology training at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Michelle stayed on as faculty from 2006 to 2016, when she joined the Faculty at UCSF. She also joined the Kidney Health Research Collaborative where her reserach encompasses the identification of early markers of kidney injury.
