In the first study of its kind in the VA health system, researchers seek to gain knowledge of their patients’ genomic composition to shape more precise treatment plans for depression. Principal investigators Kewchang Lee and Steven Batki discuss the study, funded by $12 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs. It seeks to enroll 2,000 pairs of doctors and veterans who have not responded well to previous treatment for depression. Read more.

Vietnam War Veterans, an estimated 30 percent of whom have had PTSD, present challenges to VA end-of-life care teams. In an California Healthline article, Eric Widera, Director of hospice and palliative care at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and UCSF professor in the Division of Geriatrics, comments on treating these Veterans with mental and physical health complications.
