Biology and Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Dr. Neylan is studying the relationship of stress hormones and insomnia in veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He has demonstrated that sleep disturbances are associated with high levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which has implications for the development of novel treatments for PTSD-related sleep disturbances. He is also testing a novel behavioral intervention for disturbed sleep in veterans with PTSD. In addition, Dr. Neylan is principal investigator on a study utilizing gene microarray technology to examine novel biological pathways associated with PTSD. Dr. Neylan also is involved in multiple studies examining the biology of PTSD utilizing brain imaging, electrophysiology, and neuroendocrinology.
