Cardiology from An Epidemiological Perspective
Dr. Massie has played a prominent role in several landmark studies of the epidemiology of cardiovascular health, including Irbesartan in Heart Failure with the Preserved Ejection Fraction (I-PRESERVE) and Warfarin and Antiplatelet Trial in Chronic Heart Failure (WATCH), two of the largest studies of their kind to date. Dr. Massie is member of a working group analyzing heart failure data from the Antihypertensive Lipid-Lowering Heart Attack Trial group (ALLHAT), an ongoing study of 43,000 hypertensive patients, and is currently evaluating the long-term outcomes of patients in the study who developed heart failure. He is Clinical Coordinator of the Heart Failure Quality Enhancement Research Initiative, a VA-funded program to facilitate and study the process of implementing scientific and evidence-based advances and knowledge into clinical practice. Dr. Massie works with the National ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) Surveillance Center, which follows more than 10,000 veterans enrolled in the VA system. He and his colleagues have created a database that is now being analyzed to identify predictors of ICD benefit, as well as addressing many other important questions.
