NCIRE's Impact on Veterans Veteran's Health Research Researchers by Name
There's no question that the San Francisco VA Medical Center, with the support of NCIRE, plays a major role in advancing veterans health care through research. The excellence of our NCIRE and SFVAMC investigators, all of whom are UC San Francisco faculty members, is fundamental to our success in developing cutting edge knowledge that will advance medical treatments of veterans and others, both locally and worldwide.

Addiction and Mental Illness

Dr. Batki's clinical research focuses on patients with addiction and coexisting mental illness or chronic medical illness. His research interests in addiction include stimulants, opioids and alcohol. Among his current projects is a randomized trial of hepatitis C medical treatment delivered on-site in methadone treatment versus off-site in usual clinic care.  He is also conducting a controlled trial to test the effectiveness of monitored naltrexone in reducing alcohol use in patients with schizophrenia, as well as to test the effect of alcohol use reductions on the amelioration of schizophrenia symptoms.  Dr. Batki has recently extended his interest in addiction and psychiatric comorbidity to the co-occurrence of PTSD and alcohol dependence.  His newest project, funded by the Department of Defense, will test the efficacy of topiramate in the treatment of alcohol dependence in veterans with PTSD.
